Heather K. Whittington, CPRYTP - Ext. 330
Certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Instructor
About Heather
Heather combines the ancient practices of yoga and meditation with contemporary mind-body psychology to foster growth and help her clients release stress and tension. She is a Masters of Thanatology degree candidate Hood College, and holds a Certificate of Thanatology from the same institution. Her focus is on helping the bereaved stay healthy and increase immune functioning through mindfulness based practices, relaxation and expressive arts. She became a certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Practitioner in 2003, and has participated in professional development workshops with Patricia Walden, Stephen Cope, and Sudhir Jonathan Foust. She has also participated in Bessel van der Kolk's "Frontiers of Trauma Treatment" at Kripalu Center, which provides scientific insight into how yoga can help people suffering from PTSD.
Heather is a member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists and the Association of Death Educators and Counselors, and will be presenting a poster at the 2009 ADEC Conference on Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Grief Support Groups. She facilitated yoga experientials by the Center for Eating Disorders at Shepherd Pratt during the 2008 National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, and has transformed the boardrooms of many prestigious corporations with her stress management workshops, including BP Solar and NBC. Heather was a 2003 recipient of the Entrepreneur of the Year award for Frederick County, Maryland.
She received her first Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy session during a yoga retreat at Kripalu Center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, and said "This is what I want to do with my life!" The blend of classical yoga with modern psychology found in PRYT supports Heather's personal mission of "empowering people to feel fully alive," while nurturing her own well being and spirit.

Sensations in your body are often reflective of what is happening in your life. Shoulder tension, neck pain, stiff joints, and more may be signs that you are carrying around unhealthy stress. Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy is a holistic healing art based on the ancient science of Yoga combined with elements of contemporary body-mind psychology. It differs from a yoga class in that it is performed one-on-one, and integrates your emotions with your physical self. Through gentle, assisted yoga postures, breathing techniques and non-directive dialogue, Heather will guide you to experience the connection of your body and mind, fostering release, personal growth and healing.
